CBD Eases Recovery Among Heroin Abusers

Cannabidiol (CBD) demonstrates a reduction in cue-induced heroin cravings and anxiety levels for those affected by heroin use disorder. In a study conducted at Mount Sinai hospital, former heroin abusers were treated with placebo, a low level of CBD, or a high level of CBD. Individuals who received either amount of CBD displayed fewer cravings in response to drug cues in the hours after administration, with those receiving the higher amount of CBD experiencing the lowest levels of craving one week after treatment. Participants treated with either amount of CBD exhibited significantly lower anxiety levels than the placebo group. CBD could be a viable treatment option for those suffering from heroin use disorder.

CBD Can Mitigate Anxiety in Fragile X Patients

#CBD reduces anxiety levels not just in neurotypical users, but also with patients suffering from #FragileX

Individuals suffering from the neurodevelopmental disorder Fragile X Syndrome experience many symptoms mimicking those of autism, including increased anxiety. To investigate the effects of cannabidiol (CBD) on Fragile X symptom mitigation, a mouse model possessing the DNA mutations which give rise to Fragile X was treated with CBD. CBD treatment was shown to reduce anxiety in both affected and non-affected mice while preserving locomotive, social, and cognitive performance. Future studies exploring CBD as treatment for Fragile X may reveal other benefits.

CBD May Have Potential for Hepatocellular Carcinoma Treatment

Additional research may show potential for CBD as a therapeutic agent for hepatocellular carcinoma

Cannabinoid (CBD) may be an effective treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2 receptor) has demonstrated anti-tumor behavior in other tumor types. In a new study, HCC cells treated with MDA19, a molecule that binds to the CB2 receptor, grew more slowly than untreated cells. With CBD also binding to the CB2 receptor, there may be precedent for research on the potential of CBD as a treatment for HCC.

Cannabis Reduces Tumor Growth and Symptoms in Breast Cancer Patients

Breast cancer patients can use medical cannabis to manage symptoms and slow cancer growth

Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can be used to both mitigate the symptoms of breast cancer and slow tumor growth. Both cannabis components are active against estrogen-resistant breast cancer cells and reduce disease progression by inhibiting the cell cycle and inducing death in cancer cells. Cannabis is already used to treat late-stage breast cancer, but with additional research, could also have therapeutic potential at earlier stages.

Cannabis Components Prevent Neurodegeneration Observed in Alzheimer’s

At least 9 #cannabis components may prevent the neurodegeneration observed in #Alzheimer’s patients.

Certain cannabis components may have therapeutic potential for Alzheimer’s Disease treatment. In an analysis of eleven cannabis components, nine components protected human cells from the neurodegeneration characteristic to Alzheimer’s. Further research could shed light on the capabilities of these components with respect to Alzheimer’s treatment.

CBD Could be Subject to Further Research for IBS Therapy

Cannabis may be an effective treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2), responsible for binding cannabidiol (CBD) and producing many of its known effects, can relieve many symptoms if IBS after activation by an “agonist” or binding partner. In rat models mimicking IBS, the presence of a CB2 receptor agonist decreased colonic hypermotility, a debilitating symptom of IBS. As CBD is an agonist of CB2, therapeutic innovations for IBS using cannabis may be possible.
